ぼくらは身ぶり手ぶりで売り買いをしたり、物と物との交換はできても、自由についてだとか、ぼくらをどれいにしているやつから自由を勝ちとらなければならないといい聞かせるには、土地のことばをあやつることができなければならなかった。 それに、この土地では『三本足』をあがめる気持ちが、よそより強かった。半球体の像があちらこちらにあり、わりに大きく、半球体の中に祭壇があり、僧が信仰あつい人たちに一日に三回、明けがたと昼と日没に祈るようによびかける。 土地の人びととともにぼくらも頭をたれて、もぐもぐつぶやいた。 そうこうするうちに、地図にしめされている川にたどりついた。緑の谷間をゆるやかにうねってながれる、はばの広いゆたかな水路だった。ぼくらは帰途についた。 かえりの旅は、いくときとはちがっていた。ぼくらは山脈をぬう道をたどり、まえに地峡にあった大きな都市からちらっと見ていた、海の東岸の近くに出た。 海岸をまわって北西に向かい、楽しい時をすごしながら、ふたたびおおぜいの少年を同志にくわえることができた。 この土地の人びとは、ロシア語を話した。ぼくらはロシア語をおそわっていたし、早わかりふうのノートももらっていた。北に向かっていたが、夏がぼくらを追いこした。 この土地には花が咲きみだれていた。枝に熟していくオレンジのかおりにうっとりしながら、広大な林の中を一日じゅう馬ですすんだ日のことが、印象にのこっている。 予定表では、ぼくらは冬になるまでに洞くつにもどることになっていた。いそがなければならなかった。 いいかえると、マスターどもの都市に近づいてもいるわけだった。『三本足』がときおり、地平をのし歩いているのが見えた。 しかし近くには一つもあらわれなかったので、うれしかった ― すくなくとも、“狩の日”までは。 マスターどもは、土地によって『頭の輪』をつけた人びとのあつかいをちがえている。そういうことがぼくらにわかった。 人種というものに興味を持って、やつらがそうしたのかどうかは、わからない。マスターどものほうは一種族で、国のちがいとか、それぞれの言語、また、マスターどもが地球にくるまでの人類のやっかいごとであった戦争などというものとは、えんがない。 マスターどもは、人間が戦争をしあうことは禁じていたが、ほかのいろんなことは奨励して、あるていど、人間のならわしに協力していた。 『頭の儀式』では、『三本足』どもはある日時にあらわれて、よび出しのためのふうがわりなにぶい音をひびかせ、一定の動きをして、どれいたちの儀式をつかさどる。 どの競技会でも、やつらの目的はどれいを手にいれるだけのことだったが、しんぼう強く、さいごまで出席している。やつらは、やはり見物がおもしろかったのだろう。 それとも、神のようにあがめられている役わりをはたすつもりで、そうしていたのだろう。それはそうとして、ぼくらが旅の終点にほんの数百キロのところにいたとき、奇妙な、おそろしいできごとに出くわした。 数日、ぼくらは大きな川にそって進んでいた。 |

우리는 몸짓 손짓으로 팔고 사기도 하고, 물건과 물건을 바꿀 수는 있었다. 하지만 자유에 대한 이야기라든가 우리를 노예로 만들고 있는 녀속들로부터 자유를 되찾아야 한다고 알려 주기 위해서는, 이 고장 말을 마음대로 할 수 있어야만 했다. 더욱이 이 곳은 ‘세 다리’를 우러러보는 마음이 다른 곳보다 강했다. 비교적 큰 반구체 상이 여기저기 있고, 반구체 안에 제단이 있으며, 수도자가 신앙이 두터운 사람들에게 하루 세 번 새벽과 낮과 해질 무렵에 기도를 하라고 외친다. 지방 사람들과 함께 우리도 머리를 숙이고 중얼중얼했다. 그럭저럭 하는 사이에 지도에 표시된 강에 다다랐다. 푸른 골짜기 사이를 천천히 굽이쳐 흐르는 폭넓은 큰 물길이었다. 우리는 돌아가는 길에 올랐다. 돌아가는 길은 올 때와는 틀렸다. 우리는 산맥을 누비는 길을 따라 전에 잘룩 들어간 땅에 있는 큰 도시에서 잠시 바라보았던 동쪽 해안 가까이로 나왔다. 해안을 돌어 북서쪽으로 향해 즐거운 시간을 보내면서 다시 많은 소년을 동지로 끌어들일 수 있었다. 이 고장 사람들은 러시아말을 했으므로 우리는 러시아말을 배웠다. 북쪽으로 향하고 있었지만 여름이 우리를 앞질렀다. 나뭇가지에서 익어 가는 오렌지 향기에 마음이 황홀해지면서 드넓은 숲속을 온종일 말을 타고 지나가던 일이 인상에 남아 있다. 예정표에 따르면 우리는 겨울이 되기 전에 동굴로 돌아가도록 되어 있었다. 서두르지 않으면 안 되었다. 바꿔 말하면 주인들 도시에 가까워지는 것이었다. ‘세 다리’가 가끔 지평선 위를 서성거리는 것이 보였다. 그러나 가까이에는 하나도 나타나지 않았서 다행이었다. 적어도 ‘사냥하는 날’까지는. 주인들은 지방에 따라 머리테를 쓴 사람을 달리 취급하고 있다는 것을 알았다. 각각 다른 인종에 흥미를 가지고 녀석들이 그랬는지는 알 수 없다. 주인들은 같은 한 종족으로 나라의 차이나, 언어, 또 그들이 지구로 올 때까지 지구 사람에게 있었던 전쟁 같은 것과는 인연이 없었다. 주인들은 사람이 서로 전쟁을 하는 것은 금하고 있었지만, 다른 것에는 어느 정도 인간의 관습에 따르고 있었다. 머리 의식에서 ‘세 다리’들은 정해진 날과 시간에 나타나 불러내기 위한 색다른 둔한 소리를 내고, 일정한 움직임으로 인간들의 생각을 지배한다. 어느 경기 대회에서나 그들의 목적은 인간을 노예로 손에 넣는 것뿐이었지만 참을성있게 끝까지 자리에 남아 있다. 녀석들은 역시 구경이 재미있었던 것이었던가, 아니면 하느님처럼 우러러보이는 일을 할 작정으로 그러고 있었을 것이다. 우리가 여행 종점을 겨우 몇백 킬로미터 남겨 놓고 있었을 때, 이상하고 무서운 사건과 마주치게 되었다. 우리는 큰 강을 따라 나아가고 있었다. |
