kindergarten (幼稚園 유치원) → kindergarten (幼児学校 유아학교) - long way to erase the remains of the rule era by Japan
 (Korea・dongA Ilbo) (November 10, 2016)

20 years have passed since “national school (国民 学校 국민 학교)” that was the remain of the rule era by Japan was changed into “elementary school (初等 学校 초등 학교)” , but the liquidation of the remains of Japanese empire is still pushed forward in the educational world.

The name of “幼稚園, 유치원 (kindergarten)” is brought into question, because it’s a remain of the rule era by Japanese empire.

The name “幼稚園, 유치원” is the words that Japanese translated German word “Kindergarten” into.

In 2014 the infant education revision bill which renames “幼稚園, 유치원 (kindergarten)” to “幼児学校 유아학교 (infant school)” was proposed by a member of the ruling party, but it did not pass the Congress.

Things such as “朝礼台, 조회대 (platform for morning meeting)” also make you feel past Japanese militarism as well as names.

In addition, Hollywood juniper planted in the school grounds spread out in the whole country, since Hirobumi Ito who was a Korean supervisor planted trees in the parks in Taegu city in 1909. The education authorities instruct that schools that designate this tree as school tree change it to other tree and schools remove the trees.

  1. Words of “初等 초등 (elementary)” , “学校 학교 (school) and “幼児 유아 (infant)” are kanji words derived from Japanese words too.
  2. Korean net users sent various comments for this article as follows.
    • “The remains do not disappear even if they change only the names” .
    • “Do they abolish Seoul Univ. which Japan built too?”
    • “鉛筆, 연필 (Pencil), 警察, 경찰 (police), 消防署, 소방서 (fire department), 病院, 병원 (hospital)” …These are Kanji words. Kanji words that mean things made in modern times are almost Japanese words. Do they change all? ”
    • “社会, 사회 (Society), 経済, 경제 (Economy), all are Kanji words of the Japanese style. There are no bounds …. ”
    • “I think that Korea is slightly too sensitive. You should not waste energy on useless things.”
  3. 70% of the Korean vocabulary come from Japanese. More than 90% of technical terms come from Japanese.
  4. They had used “Kanji” , but now they don’t because of their pride. They want to erase the history of Japanese reign. But that cannot erase the Japanese origin. Therefore they are going to replace them with original Korean words.
  5. However, it takes long time to change 70% of words and it is impossible to change words artificially. “新聞” (Shinbun) is the words that Japanese translated “Newspaper” into. “新聞” (신문) (Shinmun) is Korean word too. It is impossible to change that.

Prosecutors to question South Korean president over political scandal
 (U.K.・Reuters) (November 13, 2016)

South Korean prosecutors will question President Park Geun-hye over a political corruption scandal engulfing her presidency, an official said on Sunday, the first time a sitting president will be questioned by prosecutors over a criminal case.

Prosecutors are investigating whether Park exerted improper pressure on “chaebol” conglomerate bosses to raise funds for two foundations at the centre of an influence-peddling scandal involving a friend of hers, Yonhap reported on Sunday, citing prosecution sources.

It’s correct we’re planning to question the president but the date is undecided, an official at the prosecutors’ office told Reuters.

Yonhap news agency quoted a prosecution official as saying Park’s questioning should be done no later than Wednesday.

Questioning people face-to-face is our principle, the official said. Park will appear before prosecutors as a witness, Yonhap reported.

Park’s office said it would be Tuesday at the earliest before it will have a position on the prosecutors’ plan and was considering retaining a lawyer for the president.

According to the Korean media, bosses of “chaebol” conglomerate such as Samsung group, Hyundai Motors and Hanjin Group were already questioned.

The prosecution office official confirmed the chairman of Hyundai Motor, Chung Mong-koo, was questioned on Saturday but declined to confirm whether the other chaebol bosses had met prosecutors.

A Korean Air Lines spokesman confirmed that Cho, who is chairman of Hanjin and South Korea’s largest airline, had appeared for questioning but did not elaborate further.

My Opinion
  1. Mr. Shigeharu Aoyama once asked his Korean friend, a general of the Korean army, “Why did Korean presidents receive a death sentence, or commit suicide?” The general answered, “Mr. Aoyama, unfortunately this is the evidence that Korea is not democratic. It is the dynasty change” . (The Voice)
  2. The new dynasty in Korea killed the previous emperor and the aides. It seems that many Korean Presidents follow the miserable end or the historic tradition. You have to know that it is only approximately 30 years since “the declaration of democratization” was given in 1987.

Supreme Court authorizes, “It is a pro-Japanese act that Ban Ung-mo published the essay to go along with Japan in his magazine”
 (Korea・Yonhap) (November 9, 2016)

The Supreme Court judged that the act that Ban Ung-mo who was the ex-president of ‘The Chosun Ilbo’ published the essay that went along with Japan’s aggressive war in his magazine was the pro-Japanese act.

(The Chosun Ilbo February 14, 2003)
Kim Wan-seop
  • In 2003, the Seoul High Court imposed fine to Kim, because the court authorized he wrote the book which glamorized Japanese rule in Korea and the assassination of Empress Myeongseong of the Korean emperor and he defamed the character.
(Korea has the offense of defamation for the historical person more than 100 years ago.)
  (Wikipedia)
  • Kim is identified in the media as pro-Japanese due to his political positions and alleged glamorization of Japanese colonial rule in Korea, and has been accused of character defamation against various historical Korean nationalists.
  • In 2004, a Seoul prosecutor indicted him for comments he made about Kim Gu.
  • In 2006, Kim Eul-dong, the granddaughter of early 20th-century Korean nationalist Kim Jwa-jin, accused him of defamation of character for comments he made about Kim Jwa-jin in an essay posted on portal site Daum.
(The Chosun Ilbo September 3, 2004)
Lee Young-hoon (Professor at Seoul Univ.)
  • He said “The comfort women were in prostitution business” . Then he came in for severe criticism, and finally he could not but apologize.
  (Wikipedia)
  • He argues that the number of comfort women and forced laborers is exaggerated in Korea’s textbooks and challenges the Korean’s common beliefs: “Japanese colonial rule and development has been considered an absolute evil” .
(These articles of the Chosun Ilbo are deleted.)
My Opinion
  1. Korean courts determine whether it is a pro-Japanese act, or not. Is this the work that the Supreme Court does? Is that the work that a court does?
  2. If you review a historical person in Korea, you are sometimes given a criminal penalty and liability for damages. In other words you cannot express the thought that is different from the historical view that the Korean government decided. At this rate the science will not progress.
If such a judgment were permitted in United States or Japan, many people would be given a criminal penalty and they would have to compensate for damages.

College Testing Firm Shuts Venues in Korea Over Cheating
 (Korea・Chosunilbo) (November 8, 2016)

American College Testing, which administers standardized entrance exams around the world including Korea, will close 26 test venues in Korea due to rampant cheating.

ACT said on its website Monday that it will administer tests in Korea only in venues designated by the service and dispatch its own supervisors.

ACT vowed to crack down on the “criminal actions” of some test takers in Korea, who ruin the test for other students who prepare honestly for the exams.

Exams that used to be administered in 26 locations in Korea will be moved to one designated center. ACT sent out e-mails to Korean staff last Saturday informing them that a test scheduled on Dec. 10 will be administered in a hotel in Seoul. ACT said the aim was to stop “repeated leaks” of test materials in Korea.

Tests scheduled in February, April and June next year will also be administered in a single location. “It looks like back-to-back cheating prompted the tough response,” a staffer said.

In June, ACT said it discovered evidence that test materials were leaked and abruptly canceled tests to be administered in Korea. It also found evidence of essay subjects being leaked across Asia ahead of a test on Oct. 22 and ended up canceling all essay test scores.

ACT has sent exams to Korea in boxes two weeks before the test dates. They were supposed to be opened on the day of the tests, but some schools that administered the tests opened the boxes ahead of time.

The tests administered in September and October were delivered in plastic containers sealed with high-strength wire and fastened with combination locks.

One head of an English-language crammer in Korea said, “If you administer the test only in one location, students living outside Seoul will have to put up with a lot of inconvenience, and Korea’s image will be tarnished.”

Crammers often rely on teaching techniques how to beat the test or on leaking questions, rather than on teaching students how to answer questions properly, an approach encouraged by the formulaic nature of standardized tests.

My Opinion
  1. I am sorry to say that Korea can not break with old habit of the match-fixing, fakes-making and cheating.

South Korean police: 21 people accused of baseball match-fixing schemes
 (Canada・Sportsnet) (November 7, 2016)

South Korean police have accused 21 people, including professional baseball players, brokers and others, of involvement in alleged match-fixing schemes.

In a statement Monday, police said the 21 includes two pitchers who allegedly deliberately allowed walks in certain innings in 2014 games in return for money from brokers.

The two pitchers are Yoo Chang-sik of Kia Tigers and Lee Sung-min of Lotte Giants. Yoo played for Hanwha Eagles and Lee for NC Dinos at the time of their alleged schemes, according to police.

Police accused another NC Dinos player, identified only by the surname Kim, of trying to persuade his teammates to take part in match-fixing before being released from his club.

Both Lee and Kim confessed to NC Dinos officials about their match-fixing efforts later in 2014. The team released Kim but retained Lee before trading him to KT Wiz for 1 billion won ($875,000), police said. Lee eventually moved to Lotte Giants.

Police said they’ll ask prosecutors to indict all 21 people, who also include two NC Dinos officials involved in Lee’s trade and brokers who gave money to Yoo and Lee.

South Korea’s major professional sports leagues, including baseball and soccer, have been rocked by match-fixing scandals in recent years that have led to convictions and lifetime bans for some players and coaches.

In August, a South Korean court handed down a suspended two-year prison term to another NC pitcher for deliberately allowing or attempting to allow walks in four games last season. A broker involved in the scheme was sentenced to one year in prison.

My Opinion

I am sorry to say that Korea can not break with old habit of the match-fixing, fakes-making and cheating.

Park Geun-hye and the friendship behind S Korea’s presidential crisis
 (U.K.・BBC NEWS) (October 31, 2016)

The press in South Korea is full of feverish allegations of cult rituals and the mysterious influence of an old friend of President Park Geun-hye. The BBC’s Stephen Evans in Seoul looks at the personalities behind the scandal, and whether it could end up toppling a president.

Only the two women involved in this unprecedented political storm know the true dynamic of their relationship. And President Park and her confidante Choi Soon-sil are not telling.

Choi is suspected of exploiting her links with Ms Park for her own financial gain and has now returned to the country to face her accusers.

“We don’t like Korean who makes a reservation but does not come.” - Thailand is angry at the Korean No-show
 (Korea・SBS NEWS) (August 7, 2016)

When you make a reservation but do not come, it is called “No-show” . “No-show” has become the social problem in Korea, because it produces a great economic loss. It is widespread among the Koreans traveling abroad too. That becomes one of the causes that Korean tourists are disliked abroad.

Do you know the principal offenders doing such a No-show at the overseas sightseeing spots are Koreans?

In the Thai restaurants, the Korean visitor has another disgraceful name called “Tinton” that means “stupid” or “natural dementia” .

It is a daily occurrence that Korean makes a reservation but does not come. There are no cancellation calls. Because they did not come to a restaurant even if one hour passed, it provided the seat to other visitors, but the Korean visitor protested that hard. Some restaurants decided to confirm contact information and lodging place at the time of the reservation as a self-defense, but only Korean resisted this.

Such examples occur at the same time, and the impression for the Korean visitors turns worse very much.

My opinion
  1. They think everything can be settled by negotiations.
  2. It is not serious not to keep a promise for Korean. That is “Kenchanayo” mind. It is not so easy to change Korean national character.

Japanese words spread over the Korean shipbuilding industry that is the world’s best
 (Korea・E daily) (October 22,2016)

In the Korean shipbuilding industry that has the world top technology, terms derived from Japanese words are spoken frequently.

The reason a lot of words derived from Japanese remain in the Korean shipbuilding industry is that Korea learned the building methods of construction and the management methods from Japan in the early 1970s.

For example, the pronunciations and the meanings of the words such as “mantan (filling up a tank)” and “ippai (much)” are approximately just same, and you can hear them in every spot of the Korean shipbuilding industry. In addition, “heibei” (square meter) is used by pronunciation of “hebe” and “ryubei” (cubic meter) is used as “rube” .

Such a tendency spreads through our world in general including overall industry such as construction industry and the manufacturing industry, legal circles and the learned society as well as the shipbuilding industry.

One of the people concerned of the shipbuilding industry said, “Still using Japanese words in on-site many places means we are not best in the world yet. We cannot restore the best pride if we do not change them into Korean original words.”

My opinion
  1. 70% of the Korean vocabulary come from Japanese. More than 90% of technical terms come from Japanese.
  2. They had used “Kanji” , but now they don’t because of their pride. They want to erase the history of Japanese reign. But that cannot erase the Japanese origin. Therefore they are going to replace them with original Korean words.
  3. However, it takes long time to change 70% of words and it is impossible to change words artificially. “新聞” (Shinbun) is the words that Japanese translated “Newspaper” into. “新聞” (신문) (Shinmun) is Korean word too. It is impossible to change that.

Korean technology “collapse" does not stop - It’s not only Samsung and Hyundai Motors

Trouble of the space observation satellite (Korea・Dong-a Ilbo) (October 10,2016)

It became clear on October 9 that our first technology satellite 3 for space observation went around the orbit and did nothing for six months within the mission period.

The missions were scientific research and atmosphere observation and it had “a multipurpose infrared video system” , but it became clear that the important infrared camera had been broken from last May to October. It became the junk in only one and a half year from November, 2013.

However, “Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning” receives the criticism that it covered the fact and announced “technology satellite 3 finished a mission normally” to deceive the nation.

The air force introduces two AWACS “Peace Eye” more (Korea・Yonhap News) (October 9, 2016)

Korea introduced four planes so far. According to Korean JTBC TV, they had a series of trouble, and they were not repaired and the body which can fly was only one as of October, 2013 one year later after the introduction.

The domestic production of next main tank “K2” (Black Panther) which is the most important to the Korean army is approximately impossible (Korea・NEWSIS) (October 13, 2016)

The development of K2 started in 1995. It was going to be deployed in the military in 2011.

In the development of the power pack (PP) that unified an engine and the gearboxes of the K2 tank, repeated malfunctions occurred in the examination of durability. They are the damage of the bearing of the main pump drive gear axis and the cracks of the gearbox main housing, etc..

Finding the cracks of the gear housing after all this time means that the PP made in Korea may not be completed in 2021.

Serious defect of new rifle “K2C1” which the Korean army introduced (Korea・SBSNews) (October 14, 2016)

“A fever problem” of the barrel cover of rifle “K2C1” occurred and the production of the gun was stopped. It had been deployed in some military units of the army.

Because the barrel cover is made with aluminum not plastic, the cover becomes hot and you cannot have it. Korean media such as NEWSIS criticize, “You cannot keep it by hand because it is hot, when you shoot more than 100” .

It is strange using the aluminum which is high in a thermal conductivity. They don’t find the problem on the trial manufacture stage and they don’t find it after the mass production either. They find it after deploying the products for the first time.

Gas explosion under repair of midget submarine (Korea・Chosun Ilbo) (October 14, 2016)

A midget submarine exploded in the repair place in the submarine headquarters, and three cadremen died and one got injured.

The person concerned with military said, “The gas inside seems to have exploded” . The midget submarine was the old war vessel that worked for more than 30 years since being placed on duty and was to retire within several years.

My opinion
  1. Korean is a little poor at the ability of Check (evaluation).
They don’t find the problem on the trial manufacture stage and they don’t find it after the mass production either. They find it after deploying the products for the first time. This often occurs in Korea.
  2. These depend on Korean national character.
    1. They don’t mind a trifle. Korea is the country of “Kenchanayo(Never mind)” mind.
    2. They give priority to the emotion than the logic or law.
    3. They make much of appearance than the contents.
  3. I hear that the Korean citizens sigh over the Korean technology causing the results unlike the expectation and the assumption from the space to the sea.

Korean media are very busy in comparison of “Samsung” and “Toyota”
 (Japan・Iza) (October 23, 2016)

After Samsung turmoil happened, the opinion that I expected came out from the Korean media. It is a comparison with Japan that Koreans like. That is the claim “Learn from Japan” as usual.

Korean Joongang Daily News reported the issue of 2009–11 Toyota vehicle recalls.

Because the fatal accidents by the sudden acceleration happened in the United States in those days, Toyota received a hard bashing there, and President Akio Toyota was drawn to the public hearing of the U. S. Lower House and he apologised. The sales of the car were the first place in the world in 2009, but they declined in the fourth place in 2011. However, Toyota came back to the first place in the world in 2012 by the reinforcement of full-scale reinspection and safety measures. The report said “Samsung should take a lesson of Toyota into account” .

Joong-ang Daily News found out the “similarities” of Toyota and Samsung and enumerated them. It said, “Both companies overdid to keep the first place, and evils happened.” and “They received the typical bashings by United States media.” And it also pointed out Toyota’s “mistake” and said “Toyota received the criticism that it had failed in quality control because it had extended the subcontract companies for productive capacity improvement abroad.”

However, according to NHTSA (U. S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) final reports in 2011, Toyota’s problems were mechanical, not electrical and the most of the causes of the accidents by the sudden acceleration were the driver errors.

In those days Korean papers bashed Toyota and reported its recall joyfully. They said “It’s the Toyota’s overconfidence” and “The pride called the world’s best technique became the reason why Toyota ignored the consumers” . In addition, it was Korean residents in the United States who filed the suit against Toyota.

The Korean media wants to compare Toyota and Samsung in the same line in this way, though each problem, each cause and each background are totally different.

It is said that Korean hastiness and perfunctoriness caused the accident of the product. The Korean media repeat the invisible impractical claims. They say “Do it that way” and “Do it this way” , and they try to decide between this, that, and the other. The nation regards the decline of “the global leading corporation” of the pride as uneasiness.

I stare at the such typical scene in Korea every day.

My opinion
  1. Koreans usually tend to criticize Japan and speak ill of Japan, but they count on Japan only when they are in trouble. Though Korea finished the Japan-Korea swap agreement in February, 2015, they call on Japan to conclude the agreement again because they are going to be in trouble.
  2. Koreans cheer up themselves by considering the defect of the Samsung product same as the defect of Toyota car. They are not same.

Korean Film Council chooses a Japanese war beautification film as an art film
 (Korea・The Hankyoreh) (October 10, 2016)

It was confirmed that “Korean Film Council” gave the highest score to the movie that idealized war criminals of the Pacific War to be victims.

On October 10, Roh Un-re a member of the Diet said, “On August 5 the movie called ‘Japan’s Longest Day’ was chosen as the art film with the highest score in the 14th art film authorization examination of the movie promotion committee. This movie handles Japanese cabinet and the military authorities at the time of the surrender of Japan in the background of the Pacific War, and is a typical war beautification movie describing Japan that was a then war crime as a victim.

“Japan’s Longest Day” acquired 26 points in 28 points of perfect scores in the art film authorized examination where seven judges mark papers every month.

Roh said, “It was August that it was chosen as an art film. We had the anniversary of the birth of South Korea then. It’s against the nation feelings. Wrapping the Japanese manner to justify the aggressive war and to idealize it by the name of art will plant the distorted historical view to the young people.”

My opinion
  1. “Japan’s Longest Day” is not a story to idealize war. It is Japanese nonfiction by Kazutoshi Hando. It wrote the fact. The Emperor decided the acceptance of Potsdam Declaration and the surrender dissenters in the army planned a coup d’etat, but it ended in failure.
  2. Mr. Roh said, “Hideki Tojo of the Class-A war criminal said the surrender decision of the Emperor was “Imperial decision. That shows history recognition turning to the right” . But it is a fact he said the decision of the Emperor was “Imperial decision” .
He seems to want this film to be “the movie of the militaristic beautification” . He is the owner of a simple thought. Shu Nakajima acted as Hideki Tojo. If the director had wanted to make him a hero, he would have chosen a handsome and famous actor.
  3. The director Harada said, “The chief characters of the movie have deep ambivalence (tangle to happen by having contradicting feelings at the same time)” . They keep seesawing between the God and the devil, or in the middle and gray zone of the white and the black. The feeling that the Emperor, Anami and all young officers want to save their country is same, but they repeat the antipathy and the tangles on feelings side in the means and the method. Naturally Anami would have the feeling that he “wanted to fight” as the officer. However, the Emperor says, “Do not fight” . That is ambivalence. I was interested very much how he walked the tightrope.”

In the train in Osaka ... guidance broadcast to look down on Korean
 (Korea・JoongAng Ilbo) (October 11, 2016)

According to the news agency in Kyoto, in the morning on October 10, the male conductor in 40s of Nankai Electric Railway that operated in Namba, Osaka and Kansai Airport area announced in Japanese,

“There are many foreigners today and we cause you inconvenience” .

Namba and Kansai Airport are the sections that a lot of Korean tourists visiting Osaka use.

This was found out because a Japanese woman of the passengers inquired if “the broadcast was by the rule of the company” through the station employee after arrival to Kansai-Airport Station.

The company official said, “Not only Japanese but also foreign tourists are the customers. We want to prevent recurrence.”

The conductor said, “One of the Japanese passengers shouted ‘A lot of foreign tourists are cumbersome.’ I heard that and added those words after the predetermined guidance to avoid the trouble between passengers.”

My opinion
  1. The conductor said “foreigners” . They may be “Chinese” . But the article assumes it “Korean” selfishly.
  2. According to the Japanese article, the conductor said, “the foreign O passengers Sama” . “O” means polite expression, and “Sama” means “Ms” or “Mr” . The Korean article just translated the Japanese words into “the foreign passengers” in Korean language. They should attach Korean word “Nim” that means “Sama” , but they did not attach it on purpose.
  3. The conductor said, “I had no intention of the discrimination.” Apart from whether his words are true or not, this article cut the part of the article of the news agency in Japan intentionally.
  4. The conductor apologized to Japanese passengers because “foreign tourists” are noisy and they troubled Japanese passengers. So that is not discrimination.
However, it is not right to broadcast only for Japanese passengers. It is the problem of the Japanese way of thinking that they separate “Japanese” and “foreigners” .
  5. The Korean wants to make a problem of “the discrimination against Korean” .

Since 2001, Japan has 16 prize winners including Professor Yoshinori Osumi in the field of the natural science, and that is the second following the United States (55).

The secrets that Japan distinguished itself in the field of science of Nobel prizes are,

  1. State policy 2. Japanese characteristic culture 3. The efforts of the Japanese academic world

etc.

  1. At first Japan received new knowledge early among Asian countries and modernized itself, and after the lost battle of World War 2 Japan promoted science and technology as the policy. It brought the visible results called the Nobel Prizes to Japan.
  2. In addition, it seems that Japanese special craftsmanship and the cultural climate that devotes to the specific fields are useful for winning Nobel Prizes.
The mind that to achieve your responsibility in your field is to thank to the society and Otaku culture where you devote yourself to your field are connected with the study that continues digging one well.
The social atmosphere where Japanese respects the products that other persons made and evaluates the results that the craftspersons and the engineers accomplished is the soil bringing up the researchers who go the way where other persons do not go.
  3. The Japanese researchers who got the Nobel Prizes showed uniformly tenacious study posture.
Nobel Prize in Physics professor Kajita got is evaluated that the studies many Japanese scholars accumulated from generation to generation in the field of elementary particle physics bore fruits. Professor Kajita won the Nobel Prize with his real ability that he got under the direction of Professor Masatoshi Koshiba, and he takes over “the mind continuing to dig a well” .

I can finally find the Japanese Nobel Prizes to be the results that many aspects such as the policy and the culture connected.

Hong Jong-guk (69) who wrote “Japanese Nobel Prizes in science fields - Why Japan could win many Nobel Prizes in science fields” and is the advisor of Korea technologist association in Japan said, “At first the base is important. It is one of the secrets that the education bases are prepared in Japanese universities from Hokkaido to Kyushu.”

And he added, “It is important that the researchers can concentrate on their studies for a long time, and they have such minds and there is atmosphere where people understand that. They have the high network that interacts with not only the Japanese researchers but also whole world.”

My opinion
The Korean reporter speaks the difference between Japanese and Korean national traits.
Japanese Korean
Japanese respect special craftsmanship and immerse themselves in the specific fields. Koreans do not accept the value of the stores of long standing. They have almost none of craftsmanship.
They try to achieve responsibility in the field that they take over. They are lacking in a sense of responsibility. (The captain of sinking Sewol escaped at the very beginning.)
They immerse themselves in the field of interest. They are capricious.
They respect the products that other persons made and evaluate the results that the craftspersons and the engineers accomplished. It doesn’t much matter that they copy the products other persons made.
They have tenacious study posture. They are lacking in tenacity.
They have minds to concentrate on their studies for a long time, and there is atmosphere where people understand that. They demand results early too much.

AFC championship; Korean U-16 soccer did not reach the quarterfinals
 (Korea・Yonhap News) (September 23, 2016)

Korean national soccer team under 16 years old (U-16) failed to reach the quarterfinals in 2016 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) championship and to get the participation right of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) U-17 World Cup in the next year.

The national team Seo Hyo-won managed won the game 3-0 over Malaysia in the league C third round on September 22 (local time).

Korean record was 1 wins, 1 losses and 1 tie. On that day Iraq tied Oman in 1-1 (1 win and 2 ties/point 5) and came second. So Korea came third and drank the cup of bitterness of the group league defeat.

On the other hand, Japan in the league B defeated Australia in 6-0 at the last game of the group league and confirmed the first place in 3 successive victories and reached the quarterfinals .

My opinion
  • One of the Korean identities is “Anti-Japan” . Therefore, they are always concerned about Japan.

Korea tries to extend its influence to great Tang dynasty again
 (China・TouTiao.com) (September 15, 2016)

In the Korean map of ancient power of Asia, north of the Yellow River and whole Siberia are ruled by “the United Silla” and “the United Silla” is written on it in kanji and the Hangul Alphabet. Tang dynasty is driven to the southeast corner. It is just a laughingstock. Emperor Taizong of Tang dynasty is maybe crying in the rest room.

History book by a Korean scholar (the 7th century)

Silla is too big. The Korean scholar thinks Japan belonged to Silla too. Tang dynasty is smaller than Silla.
Fact (wikipedia
My opinion
  1. Koreans give priority to the emotion than the logic or law. They have few feelings to investigate the truth.
  2. Some say there has been no person to obtain the Nobel Prize in the scientific fields because of “Kenchanayo(Never mind)” mind and lack of logical thinking.

  3. “The Boy’s Festival” is not from Chinese culture, but the Korea’s original custom. ( (Korea・Asia Economy)) (June 28, 2016)
Some Korean scholars say “The Gangneung Danoje Festival came from the custom that prayed God of Mt. Daegwangryong for the richness. It is different from the Boy’s Festival in China. It originates in May festival of Mahan confederacy (B. C. the 1st century - A. D. the 3rd century) that was a tribal state of the ancient Korea Peninsula.”
But its origin is not accurate. (wikipedia)。 In the first place the record of Mahan confederacy does not exist. It is Korean national traits to insist on something as if it is a fact though there is no record or the evidence.

  4. Originally the kanji was letters of the Dongyi tribe. (Korea・World Ilbo) (April 4, 2011)
Chin Taeha, Korean professor at Inje University insisted, “kanji was our letter” , because “Lin Yutang, linguist of the Republic of China said that kanji was the letter which the Dongyi tribe created” .
Dongyi…This is the generic name of the other ethnic groups that lived in the east of Zhongyuan in ancient China. It includes many tribes, and the tribe called “Dongyi” does not exist. However, some Korean scholars insist as if there was the tribe called “Dongyi” in Korea.
Chinese scholars say, “We cannot remove the possibility that a so-called ‘Dongyi’ contributed to the invention of the kanji, but it is exaggerated that the inventor of the kanji was ‘Dongyi’. In addition, the land where ‘Dongyi’ lived in is east area of China and it had been already absorbed in the Chinese people.” It seems that Chinese scholar is right.

The Korean airport staffs look down on Chinese tourists
 (Korea・Yonhap news) (September 16, 2016)

Chinese tourists who visited Jeju Island (Korea) that was popular in Chinese sent an accusation that they were abused by the airport staff.

Korean woman Kim Miyon (fictitious name, 44 years old) who lived in China had a very unpleasant experience in Jeju Airport.

When she visited Jeju for work on September 4 and lined up in the line of the passport control with a large number of Chinese tourists at the airport, she could hardly believe her ears.

The airport staff pointed his finger at a Chinese and shouted in Korean, “Hey!” “Go away!”

Other staffs also took the insolent attitude in the same way looking down on the Chinese who lined up. She heard the abusive words “Noisy Chinese guys!” too.

Ms. Kim protested the woman staff who was very short with her in Korean, and then the staff was surprised and said “I’m sorry.”

Ms. Kim protested the Korea Tourism Organization on the phone immediately after return home in China, but the organization and the Immigration Bureau denied this matter and said “That is unbelievable” .

A guide in a Chinese travel agency said, “It’s true that the Korean recognition for the Chinese is not so good because some Chinese don’t use good manners for these past several years.” And he pointed out, “It is undesirable to give rough response to the Chinese, because they are the guests visiting Korea.”

But the Korean net users sent a lot of comments to criticize Chinese.

My opinion
  1. Koreans do not have the spirit of hospitality for foreigners, unlike Japanese.
  2. China is the country of “egocentrism” . They tend to be disliked in the foreign countries, because they act in defiance of good manners.

Will Japan continue to be a Korean friendly nation, even if Korea continues insulting Japan?
 (Korea・Chosun Ilbo) (11 September, 2016)

Korea has the fate that Korea cannot but become very sensitive for the international situation. Because Korea is in the geopolitical position surrounded by large countries such as the United States, China, Japan and Russia, and is in the geo-economics situation where Korea cannot but greatly depend on the overseas market economically. However actually, there are no countries but Korea that has poor understanding about neighbor countries and turns a face away from the reality that the country faces.

“Only Koreans don’t understand how rich Koreans are.” “Only Koreans don’t mind the risk of North Korea.” “Only Korea in the world ignores Japan.”

However, the really serious problem is that the Korean unique understanding for the global community and neighbor countries does not change easily. They understand neighbor countries with a very prejudiced way of thinking far from reality.

At first our viewpoint for China always wavers. China that has become the large country tries to draw North Korea and South Korea in the Korean Peninsula into Chinese side, and is going to threaten Japanese predominance in the East China Sea. Furthermore, China is going to lengthen its power by building the artificial islands in the South China Sea. Though China is very aggressive for neighbor countries in this way, we have very strong tendency to watch China favorably.

The viewpoint for Japan is very simple, too. We Koreans think “It’s no problem Koreans say and do anything to Japan, because Japan is an assailant for Korea.” We can not think the reality that our security and economy do not work without Japan from a beginning.

The viewpoint for The United States is very prejudiced, too. While we think “It’s natural the United States protects our country” , we object to the policy to strengthen the alliance from a beginning. The citizen groups appealing for anti-Americanism loudly do not protest for the pressure of China and the North Korean nuclear development and human rights violations at all.

If Korea cannot read the change of the global community exactly and grasp the way of thinking of neighbor countries well, the fate of Korea will be like a candle flickering in the wind. The situation that Korea faces is not so easy that we cannot devote to only the domestic issues and pursue only our profits. The reality is rather very dangerous and severe.

Park Cheol Hee (Director of Laboratory of Japanology at Seoul University, Professor at international graduate school)

My opinion
  1. There is the Korean scholar thinking logically in this way. But, most Koreans think emotionally and think without any grounds that Korea is superior than Japan on every aspect. They think that “It’s no problem Koreans say and do anything to Japan and insult Japan.”

A 49 year old defendant who insulted a president as “descendant of the pro-Japanese group” is fined : Seoul central district court
 Korea・Daily Mail (September 6, 2016)

On September 6, the Seoul central district court handed down a decision of fine 500,000 won (approximately 450 dollar) for defendant L (49) who had insulted the president Baek Chung Wong (50) who managed the eating‐out company “The Born Korea” on the Internet and had been prosecuted. In this February, the defendant L had commented “the president Baek is a descendant of the pro-Japanese group” against the article about Baek in the portal site.

The judge wrote in the decision, “defendant L insisted that it was a fair act, but the comment that the defendant L sent is against the social norm if you think the socially‐accepted idea” .

My opinion
  1. If you say “You are pro-Japanese” in Korea, it’s a crime. It’s only South Korea and North Korea where you will be a criminal if you say “You like Japan” to someone.
It is one of the Korean national traits.

Some Koreans carry away the apples for the event rushingly
 (Korea・KUKMINILBO) (August 31, 2016)

A event of local farm products was held in Gwanghwamun of Seoul in Korea. The video that some participants carried away the apples for the event by force was shown on the Internet.

According to the Korean media, “apple fishing experience” was carried out at the event, but the event was called off because of the unreasonable actions by some citizens after all.

My opinion
  1. Koreans don’t mind a trifle. Korea is the country of “Kenchanayo(Never mind)” mind.
  2. For better or worse, they have rough national traits. They don’t worry about details. Some say Korean resembles the Latin people.

2-months suspension of the director of a center of the Korean governmental organization for his remark “Long live the Emperor!”
 (Korea・HuffingtonPost) (August 26, 2016)

Lee Jong-Ho, the director of the national climate change adaptation center owned by Korea Environment Institute (KEI) cried “Long live the (Japanese) Emperor!” for three times. And the disposal of suspension from duty two months was given to him.

The Office for Government Policy Coordination of Korea , the upper part organization of KEI confirmed that “the injustices” such as many pro-Japanese remarks he said were facts. The staffs of KEI testified that the director Lee had repeated problem remarks such as “Japan is mother county” .

The director Lee denies his remarks.

Dismiss Lee Jong-Ho, the director of the national climate change adaptation center!
My opinion
  1. If you say “Long live (Korean) President Park!” in Japan, you are only thought to be a strange person. The pro-Japanese remark seems to be “the injustice” in Korea. “Long live the American President!” is good, but “Long live the (Japanese) Emperor!” is no good there.
  2. Many Korean singers sing on TV in Japan, but the opposites are not permitted in Korea. You can see the Korean national trait of “Anti-Japan” , and Japanese national trait of “foolishly optimistic” .

“Attention Korean pickpockets” - active minor offenses overseas are disgrace of Korea
 (Korea・TVchosun) (August 24, 2016)

[Anchorperson]

Koreans committing the crime abroad are increasing recently. They are not only drug traffics or the prostitution but also the minor offenses such as pickpockets. And that makes the image of Korea lower.

[Report]

A woman hangs around the back of the tourist who chooses something. After having shut out the field of vision with her hat, she steals cash in no time.

In Taiwan three Korean, Park (44) and others posed as tourists and stole approximately 700,000 won (approximately 630 US dollar) from the Indonesian tourists recently.

[Store employee]

“The zipper of the wallet was not opened. They seem to have very good (pickpocket) technique.”

Park who was arrested by the police said, “I was forced to do crime by the pickpocket tissue.” The Taiwanese police started the investigation into Korean pickpocket tissue around the tourist attractions.

The Korean prostitution overseas are increasing, too. Dozens of Korean women were arrested in Taiwan and Macao in last year, and 47 Korean women who prostituted themselves in Japan in this March were arrested by the police.

[Ms. Ko - a prostitution suspect overseas]

“Which country are you from?” “I’m a Korean. Why do you photograph with a video camera? ” “Were you not arrested?”

According to the investigation, 1,500 Koreans a year on average commit crimes abroad, and are executed by the foreign judiciary authorities.

My opinion
  1. I think the pickpocket is not a minor offense, but it seems the minor offense in Korea.
  2. The women who engaged in prostitution business in Korea reached approximately 1.07% of woman population (Korean National Statistical Office investigation in 2013). Korean seems to lack the sense of guilt for the prostitution.
0.538% in the population ratio means 0.538% of the men and women, so it becomes 1.07% of women because it is women who prostitute.

Moon Dae-sung’s IOC membership suspended
 (Korea・THE KOREA TIMES) (July 28, 2016)

The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) executive board has suspended Moon Dae-sung, 39, of all activities as an IOC member and IOC Athletes’ Commission member.

According to the IOC’s webpage showing a list of 90 IOC members, Moon’s name is marked with three asterisks as of Wednesday, which means “suspended.”

The IOC said the decision “follows a recommendation from the IOC Ethics Commission, further to the decision by Kookmin University to withdraw Mr. Moon’s degree on the ground of plagiarism.”

The Ethics Commission acknowledged the seriousness of the damage to the reputation of the Olympic Movement and the need to take the provisional measure to suspend all the rights, prerogatives and functions linked to Mr. Moon Dae-sung’s IOC membership until the Supreme Court of the Republic of Korea has pronounced a final verdict, the IOC said in a statement.

Moon, a taekwondo gold medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics, was granted a doctoral degree at Seoul’s Kookmin University in 2007. He was alleged to have plagiarized his doctorate thesis in 2012. Two years later, the university revoked his degree after determining that he had reproduced parts of a local scholar’s thesis. He soon filed a suit against the university but lost his appeal twice.

Due to the allegations, Moon who held a parliamentary seat to represent a district in the southern port city of Busan, left the ruling Saenuri Party shortly after being elected. He rejoined the party in 2014 and completed his four-year term in May.

Moon was elected as an IOC member in 2008 and his eight-year term will expire after the Rio de Janeiro Olympics along with three other IOC members.

My opinion

“Japanese Emperor or Japanese King?”
 (Korea・Chosun Ilbo) (July 25, 2016)

We Korean calls Japanese emperor Japanese King by various reasons. It is not easy to make the boundary in difference between emperor and king.

Korean does not have to call him the emperor same as Japanese. For Korean 35 years ruled by Japanese imperialism was hell.

We cannot think using the word “Emperor” , because Japan shows little sign of regret by which the damaged countries are satisfied.

Kim Suhye
Correspondent at Tokyo
My opinion
  1. The reporter said that Korean had refused using “the Emperor” because of Japan’s Annexation of Korea in 1910, but that did not begin at that time.
  2. When Japan sent a Japanese sovereign’s message to Joseon Dynasty in 1868, the Dynasty refused receiving it. The reason is that Japan used the words that means “the emperor” . For Korea, “the emperor” does not exist except “the Chinese emperor” . For Korean, the first is China, the second is Korea and Japan is at the bottom. So Korean can not allow that Japanese emperor uses the word “the Emperor” .
  3. The Korean consciousness does not change now either. Though Korea had been invaded and ruled by China many times in the past, Korea does not have the antipathy for that, but they think that the rule by Japan inferior to Korea is humiliation. In other words it is based on “contempt for Japan” from way back not to use the word “the Emperor” .
  4. Descriptions of 倭‘wa’ and ‘倭奴’ can be found in domestic literatures and history books at the ages of Goryeo (918 - 1392) and Joseon Dynasty (1392 - 1910) in Korean Peninsula, and some people says that is the express of contempt for Japan by Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty. (倭‘wa’ and 倭奴 means inferior people. It means Japan.)
  5. That is the reason that only Korean says “the colony times were hell” , though Taiwan which became the colony of Japan in the same way as Korea does not have antipathy that much.
  6. The reporter should watch the history well and write the article logically.

Jung Joon Young’s Drug Restaurant Responds To Suspicions Of Plagiarism
 (Korea・Yonhap news) (Korea・Soompi) (July 28, 2016)

Singer Jung Joon Young’s band Drug Restaurant recently responded to accusations of plagiarism surrounding their song “Mistake.”

Drug Restaurant recently released their song “Mistake” on May 27, which was accused of plagiarizing Two Door Cinema Club’s “Someday” for its similar sound.

Netizens have remarked that the intro of the two songs does sound similar, but others noted that Drug Restaurant took the guitar riff from Two Door Cinema Club’s “Someday” and “What You Know” and incorporated it into “Mistake.”

“The overall planning and vision of the song was done by member Jo Dae Min, who really respects Two Door Cinema Club, so the sound does have their influence, but it is not plagiarism,” explained the band.

On July 28, Two Door Cinema posted a message on their official twitter stating, “Nice to see we’ve inspired someone,” and linked Drug Restaurant’s song to their post.

My opinion
  1. This is a common case in Korea. They don’t mind a trifle. Korea is the country of “Kenchanayo(Never mind)” mind.

China says South Korea’s THAAD anti-missile decision harms foundation of trust
 (U.K.・REUTERS) (July 25, 2016)

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has criticized South Korea’s decision to deploy an advanced U.S. anti-missile defense system to counter threats from North Korea, saying it harmed the foundation of their trust.

The announcement by South Korea and the United States this month that they would deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) unit has already drawn protests from China that it would destabilize regional security.

The decision is the latest move to squeeze the increasingly isolated North Korea, but China worries the system’s radar will be able to track its military capabilities. Russia also opposes the deployment.

The recent move by the South Korean side has harmed the foundation of mutual trust between the two countries, Wang was quoted by South Korean media as telling South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se.

THAAD is most certainly not a simple technical issue, but an out-and-out strategic one, Wang said late on Sunday on the sidelines of a conference of foreign ministers from the 10-member Association of South East Asian Nations in Vientiane.

Yun told Wang the deployment was aimed at protecting South Korea’s security and that it would not damage China’s security interests, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said.

My opinion
  1. China does not intend to stop the rampage of North Korea from the beginning. China does only a pose not to expect it.
The rampage of North Korea is not minus, but a plus for China. Because it becomes the pressure on United States. Therefore, China does not intend to take sanction against North Korea from the beginning.
  2. Korea should have noticed it earlier.

Koreans are crazy!
 (Korea・Chosun Ilbo) (July 16, 2016) (Korea・SBS NEWS) (March 13, 2015)

The author is Eric Surdej who had worked at the French corporation of Korean LG Electronics for ten years and acted as the representative of the corporation.

He criticized Korean traditional work culture saying , “it has many you should criticize from the point of view of the human management” .

At the dinner with head office’s president who visited Paris and the local employees, the seats were decided by the posts and the ranks, and it was given “You must not sit down and eat earlier than the president” as the prior notice.

In addition, because an officer of the French corporation photographed the photograph of the president in secret then, the managing director of the head office sent the instruction “Fire the officer!” the next day.

Koreans do not have their lives except in the company. There are long hours of hard work (10 to 12 hours a day) and they say only about the numbers of results and there is no talk and discussion. He insists Korean companies should abandon “the vertical culture of ‘Command hierarchy’” and should have the culture to harmonize the local persons.

Anti-Korea demonstration near Korea consulate general in Osaka
 (Korea・Yonhapnews) (July 17, 2016)

On July 17, a demonstration was performed near the Korean consulate general in Osaka. It made a demand for expulsion of the Korean residing in Japan and the diplomatic intercourse rupture between Japan and Korea. The oppositions gathered, too and protested the demonstration, and the outskirts were thrown into a commotion for a time.

The person concerned of the citizen’s group “active conservative movement” called people to “Big anti-Korea demonstration” on the Internet and carried it out. At about 3:00 p.m. on that day, approximately ten people shouted, “Break with the annoying neighbor” or “Go out, Korean” with the national flags and the sun flags and the loudspeakers in their hands.

On the other hand, the members of the opposition roared with a loudspeaker, “Stop the hate speech” and “Go home the racist” .

Both groups booed each other in a loud voice on the sidewalk opposite of the consulate general for approximately one and a half hours, while dozens of police officers on the guard came between two groups.

There was the scene that they struggled and was controlled by the police officers. The tourists and shoppers were embarrassed and left at a quick pace.

It seems the opposition examines a legal action based on the regulations of the city.

My Opinion
  • Most of Japanese are against the Anti-Korea demonstration and hate-speech. In Japan, there are a few Anti-Korea demonstrations and hate-speech and they are not radical. And the demonstration against Anti-Korea demonstration is carried out, too.
  • The anti-Korea demonstration is the unJapanese-like action. It is shame of Japan. It is the same as a Korean baking a Japanese national flag.
  • If you want to criticize something, you should do it against the concrete person and his/her act. You should insist on your position fairly, legally and logically.

  • On the other hand, the radical anti-Japan demonstrations such as baking the Japanese national flag or the photo of Japanese Prime Minister are permitted in Korea. And I have not seen the demonstration objecting to anti-Japan demonstration in Korea. If Koreans carried out such a demonstration, probably they would be killed.
  • I have not seen the Korean government tried to stop anti-Japan education and violent anti-Japan demonstration.
  • Koreans seem to be against Anti-Korea demonstration, but seem to be favorable to anti-Japan demonstration. For Koreans, it’s good for Koreans to do Anti-Japan demonstration, but it’s no good for Japanese to do the same action.
It is the same as there are many Korean athletes and singers who work in Japan, but not vice versa. There are a few Japanese athletes and singers who work in Korea. (Japanese songs had been prohibited in Korea until recently.)
Their action is inconsistent. After all Korea is a country that gives priority to the emotion than the logic or law.
  • Korea should make the anti-hate speech law, too.

34 candidates of Miss Korea have same face
 (China・IThome) (July 14, 2016)

The result of the traditional beauty pageant “Miss Korea 2016” held in Korea every year was announced on July 8th.

However, “who won the championship” is not the topic in the Japanese net users, but it is the big topic that “34 candidates of Miss Korea have same face” .

They say “All candidates have same face. They are made by the same mold.” “It may be the shadow cloning technique by Ninja.”

My opinion
  1. Because they make the form of the nose and the chin same by plastic surgery, they look like the same person.
  2. Japanese think that Confucianism culture does not permit people to perform the operation on their bodies. But in Korea that has Confucianism culture, people like the plastic surgery. The plastic surgery seems to have nothing to do with Confucianism.
